To encounter the works of Fabien Verschaere is to come face to face with a very personal universe.
In his first solo show in our space, this internationally renowned artist brings together a diverse selection of past and present works that reflect a constant visual dialogue with his own life experiences. Yet through this ‘personal mythology,’ the artist exposes core essences of human nature that implicate us all, dealing with such polarities as life, death, good and evil. Verschaere’s exploration of childhood and ritualistic imagery enables him to express such essences with clarity and directness. Such simplicity is also reflected in the materials he uses, watercolours, felt pens and ceramic sculpture, and wall drawings, conceived especially for our space. The ‘dessin anime’, Magic Travel Take Away-music by Liquid Architecture, tells a repeating story, a visual fairy tale which resonates with truths of human existence with clarity that is ordinarily clouded by the actions of day to living.
Verschaere’s aesthetically unique fantasy world is thus underpinned by very human essences, and is in this way both charming and deeply affecting. He engages with individual realities, yet reveals the universal aspects of human subconscious that unite and control us all. We are shown that in many ways we are guilty of the same desires and hates. Ultimately we are faced with a paradox, both inspiring and daunting. Can our individual identities ever conceal that through our very nature we are ‘The same in all the world?’
